Taroona is a lovely, green and established suburb about 10km from the centre of Hobart.
A key focus of Taroona is the water. There are two main beaches as well as a foreshore track that is accessible from most of the streets on the lower side of Channel Highway. The streets on the higher side of the highway enjoy fantastic views of the river. Some properties on the lower side will have a view too.
Property in Taroona can be hard to come by, either to rent or to buy, as the suburb is pretty tightly held and good properties do not stay on the market for very long. It also has a high level of home ownership and a lot less properties available for rent than other locations in Hobart.
Facilities in Taroona are fairly limited now. When Jo grew up here in the 1970s and 80s there was a busy shopping centre operating, but that has since become vacant as the demand for local shopping reduced over time. There are however a couple of great places to eat and a vet remains in the suburb. Shopping is not too far away in either Kingston or Sandy Bay.
Many properties in Taroona were built in the 1950s and 1960s, however in the higher streets you start to see properties from the 1980s through to new and recent builds. There are also newer properties dotted around the suburb. You can also find a ‘renovator’s delight’ if that interests you.
