Moving house is stressful and part of the process is the need to make a lot of decisions during this time. It is also an expensive time and it can seem like a lot of money is going out – probably because it is!

So there is the pressure to watch your pennies. However sometimes it can be worth spending a little more to take the pressure off during the physical move of your belongings.


The Moving Company Quotes

The cost of the moving company can be very high – especially if you are moving interstate and especially if that includes getting across Bass Strait to Tasmania. It really is an expensive stretch of water. I have some info on getting your things to Tassie in another post.

When you are in the process of arranging quotes from a few moving companies, I suggest you ask them to itemise a couple of extra things.

It may seem indulgent to have the moving company pack up your house and yes it does feel like a luxury when you do it. It is however a luxury that many people can afford as the cost is not as high as you would assume. I encourage everyone who is moving to ask for the cost of packing their belongings to be itemised in the moving quotes. You may get a pleasant surprise.

Then compare this cost to the cost of your own time to pack. How many days of leave from work, or weekends, will you otherwise devote to packing up the house? Add to this the inconvenience of having a partly packed up house for a week or three! Alternatively, the packers will come in one day before the move and do the lot. You don’t have to touch a thing, other than packing a suitcase for each family member to last a couple of days.

In addition, ask the moving company for the cost for them to supply the packing boxes and materials if you are to pack yourself. This provides another cost to compare to the full packing quote and also to compare to the hassle of gathering boxes for weeks.

I first experienced the joys of this service when I moved to New Zealand with work many years ago – and someone else was paying. I didn’t think it would be something I would ever pay for myself, but we have used this service in four moves in the last few years and it has made the whole process so much easier. During our move last year, we continued to work in the office all day as the packers got to work. How easy is that?

So what does it cost?

For our most recent move from Sandy Bay to Kingston Beach the difference between the cost to supply materials and the cost to do all the packing was only about $500. To me that was incredible value to not have to spend many days doing it ourselves. For our move from Melbourne to Hobart the difference between the cost to supply materials and pack and the cost to move only was about $1,000.
